Dear Church Family – It is Thanksgiving Week! I know that for some of you, this is a very hard time of year – hard to feel thankful for a whole variety of reasons, hard to be grateful in the midst of grief, hard to think about big family gatherings when you are lonely. Thanksgiving as a holiday comes with all sorts of complications depending on who is or who is not “at the table”. Thanksgiving expectations can be very painful. Perhaps this is a year when you need simply to be held in God’s loving arms and know that you are not alone.
For others of us, we need to be reminded, perhaps, that gratitude – not as a holiday but as a practice – gratitude is in itself life giving. Did you know that you have to practice gratitude? You have to practice focusing on the gifts of each day rather than the disasters? You can practice gratitude by taking time each day to name three things for which you are grateful and why. You can write your gratitude in a journal or include gratitude in your prayers or reflect on your gratitude before you fall asleep at night. Practice gratitude and know the life giving, joyful benefits. Gratitude can help to ease the worry of daily life. Gratitude has physical, mental and emotional benefits. Gratitude is part of our faith life. Just as we pray to God in times of desperate need, so too, we can lift to God our gratitude for the blessings of the day.
However you are feeling about Thanksgiving this year, do know that you are invited to participate in the Community Thanksgiving Dinner – as a volunteer or as a guest. In worship on Sunday we will reflect more on what our faith has to say our anxious times and how gratitude may just be the best antidote!
