Dear Members and Friends –
“Lord Jesus, you stand at the door and knock. May we hear you knocking and invite you in to feast with us.” – John Newton, Worth Abbey
Lent begins on Ash Wednesday (March 1st) when we enter the 6 weeks of spiritual preparation for the Easter Celebration. This year, our Lenten focus at church will be “Around the Table”. In worship we will hear stories of feasts, of food and of table conversations with Jesus. For Lenten study, you are invited to sit at the table for the Monday Night Bible Study or for Sunday mornings with Lava doing Spiritual Memoir Writing (see announcement in this newsletter). For Fellowship, you are invited to sit Around the Table on Wednesday evenings and join in a conversation about our world and our faith over a simple supper (see explanation in this newsletter). For Outreach, you are invited to bring non perishable food each Sunday which the Church School children will collect and build into a table of generosity! (canned meats, soups, peanut butter, vegetables, fruit & boxed noodles, rice, etc).
Food is both necessary sustenance and something extravagant. Family recipes connect you to your ancestors while certain smells remind you of home. Food can be exotic or simple. Yet when we all sit around the table together we engage in an act of community, hospitality and gratitude.
Sitting together and sharing a meal is an act of justice and inclusivity.
Please be a part of Lent Around the Table this year.
See you in Church and at the Table – Lucia
